Tellscreen privacy policy (October 2026)
Checked and updated
Tellscreen stores the videos you record or upload, what is said in them and what our AI writes about them, so that you and the people you send a link to can watch them; it has no accounts, shows no ads and sells nothing about you.
Tellscreen is operated by Persist Ventures. Questions about this policy go to hello@tellscreen.com.
What we store
- Your recordings and uploads: the video and sound, on our server (Fly.io, in Virginia, United States), until you delete them.
- What is made from them: the transcript, the AI title, summary, key points and chapters, the change list, still frames, a GIF preview and MP4 copies.
- Your library key: a random code your browser (or the desktop app) keeps, which says which videos are yours. We store only a one-way hash of it. There is no account, password or email address.
- Viewers: a random viewer code in the viewer's browser, how far each viewer watched, and the name a viewer types when commenting or reacting. The owner of a video can see viewer names and how far they watched.
- Comments and reactions people leave on a video.
- Payments: if you buy Pro, Stripe handles the payment and keeps your card details and email address. We keep the Stripe customer and subscription IDs and the plan, linked to the hash of your library key. We never see your card number.
We use no advertising or analytics trackers and set no tracking cookies. The website keeps your library key, viewer code and name in your browser's local storage.
Who processes your recordings
To write the transcript, the summary and the change list, we send the recording's sound, its transcript and still frames of the screen to AI models through OpenRouter (openrouter.ai), which passes them to the model's provider (currently OpenAI's Whisper for speech-to-text and Anthropic's Claude for the summary and change list). They process it to answer that request. Stripe processes payments. Fly.io hosts the server.
Who can see a video
Anyone with a video's link can watch it, unless you make it private (only you) or give it a password (Pro). A private or password-protected video can still be opened by an AI agent if you give the agent its own link with Copy for AI; that link stops working when you change the password.
The Chrome extension
The extension draws on the tab you are looking at only when you turn it on (its shortcut, or its button). It does not read, collect or send the content of any page. It remembers your pen, color and spotlight choices in Chrome's extension storage on your computer. Its record shortcut opens tellscreen.com, where the recording is made as described above.
The desktop app
The app records your screen and microphone only between when you start and stop a recording, and uploads it to tellscreen.com as described above. It keeps its settings and your library key on your computer. When you first open it, it installs the Tellscreen skill for Codex (in ~/.agents/skills) and the Tellscreen plugin or skill for Claude Code, so those tools can start a recording; you can remove them like any other skill or plugin.
Deleting your data
Delete a video from its page (Settings, then Delete video) and its files, transcript, change list, comments and reactions are deleted from our server. Unfinished recordings with nothing uploaded are removed within a few hours. To cancel Pro, use Manage billing in your library; Stripe keeps payment records as the law requires. For anything else, write to hello@tellscreen.com.
